Norway braces for heavy snowfall as weather warnings issued across West Finnmark, Troms, and Nordland
The northern regions of Norway are bracing for challenging weather conditions as heavy snowfall is expected from Wednesday evening through Friday morning. Areas of West Finnmark, Troms, and Nordland will see significant accumulations, particularly on Thursday night, with localised snowfall amounts potentially reaching between 20 and 30 centimeters in just 24 hours. Higher elevations above 200 meters and more inland regions are likely to be the most affected.
This snowfall may impact already vulnerable infrastructure, leading to longer travel times and difficult driving conditions. Just a week prior, the region experienced heavy rainfall that caused flooding, isolating around 500 residents in Lyngen municipality, washing away several roads in Finnmark, and inundating holiday cabins at a campsite in Tromsø.
Additionally, late Wednesday and early Thursday are forecasted to bring elevated water levels in coastal and fjord areas of North Troms and West Finnmark. The meteorological institute has issued warnings for high water levels, urging caution in beach zones due to potential high waves and advising boat owners to secure their vessels.
Despite the high water warnings, meteorologists do not predict the upcoming water levels will cause damage comparable to last week’s flooding. The anticipated snowfall is more likely to result in consequences related to snow, especially in the inner areas, where strong winds could create snowdrifts.
Airport operations may also face disruptions due to the severe weather, with reduced visibility expected as heavy snow falls. Travelers are advised to consider postponing non-essential journeys, particularly in Northern Norway, where challenging road conditions are expected.
