Heavy rainfall causes landslides and road closures in Westfjords, Iceland
Heavy rainfall in the Westfjords has led to multiple landslides, causing road closures and disruptions for residents. The main road through Ísafjarðardjúp has been shut since last night, with no clear timeline for reopening. The road at Eyrarhlíð, connecting Hnífsdal and Ísafjörður, is also blocked after a significant landslide occurred around 3 PM today.
In response to the closures, emergency shelters are being set up in Ísafirði and Bolungarvík for those unable to return home. A local announcement indicated that individuals needing assistance should head to these schools, where the Red Cross will provide support.
In Hnífsdal, authorities have warned of potential damage to the water supply following another landslide that affected a section of the water line. Residents were advised to store water in bottles as a precaution, in light of ongoing heavy rainfall.
Recent reports indicate that numerous landslides have occurred throughout the region, with at least six incidents noted just last night. The weather remains severe, but forecasts suggest a reduction in rainfall this evening.
As the situation develops, emergency services are on standby, ensuring swift responses to further incidents. Meanwhile, many locals are staying indoors, as harsh weather conditions— including heavy rain and strong winds—continue to make travel hazardous. The road will remain closed for the time being as cleanup efforts begin.
