The chairperson of the Icelandic Nature Conservation Association has expressed skepticism that environmental organizations are behind an investigation regarding Jón Gunnarsson, a former minister. Árni Finnsson stated that these organizations believe whaling activities in Iceland are largely concluded. He cited prominent environmental groups like Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund, noting their focus on climate change and biodiversity rather than whaling.

Reports suggest that there is uncertainty regarding who is gathering information about Jón Gunnarsson, a former member of the Independence Party and current assistant to the Minister of Food. Some outlets have indicated that environmental organizations may be involved. Finnsson remarked that the market for whale products in Japan has significantly collapsed, making it unlikely that any organization would benefit from misleading Jón or his son.

Further complicating matters, it has been reported that Black Cube, a private intelligence firm known for its controversial methods and linked with former Mossad employees, was hired to deceive Jón’s son into providing information about whaling in Iceland. Finnsson described this situation as peculiar, emphasizing that environmental organizations typically operate through established government channels, not targeting individual politicians or their families.

Jón himself commented on his entry into politics, emphasizing it was based on expertise rather than favoritism. As global discussions on climate change continue, he believes Icelandic authorities should prioritize these issues over whaling, criticizing the government’s current focus on allowing certain individuals to engage in whaling rather than addressing climate change effectively.
