In late July, drivers faced numerous tire failures at a construction site between Ylläsjärvi and Kittilä. Reports indicated that some motorists experienced two blowouts in one incident, with dozens of tires damaged daily. Following this, 31 drivers sought compensation from the local transport authority but were left disappointed as none of the claims were approved.
According to Hilla Raivio, the head of damage compensation at the authority, significant negligence or a failure to meet maintenance standards is required for compensation claims to be considered. She explained that if road maintenance is improperly executed or certain tasks are neglected, this could lead to eligible compensation.
Motorists interviewed highlighted the size and sharpness of the stones at the construction site. Jaakko Luiro, a project manager for the transport authority, confirmed the stones were standard quartzite gravel, yet acknowledged that the number of tire damages was unusually high.
Typically, about 2,000 compensation applications for property damage are submitted annually for Finland’s road network. This year alone has seen 1,900 claims thus far, marking it as a typical year. Statistically, the most common damage results from drivers hitting potholes on paved roads, with incidents like those at the Ylläsjärvi site accounting for roughly one in ten cases.
On average, around 20% of applicants receive compensation, which varies case by case based on the extent of damage incurred. Compensation aims to restore applicants to their financial position prior to the incident, while avoiding any profit from the payout.
Claims can also be made through insurance, particularly if the driver holds comprehensive coverage. Insurance providers reportedly receive dozens of such requests monthly.
