Early Monday morning, the cultural center Otsola in Hyvinkää became the target of a suspected arson. This venue has served as an important gathering place for far-right groups, hosting various events throughout the fall, including fight nights, as indicated by social media activities. According to Tommi Kotonen, a researcher at the University of Jyväskylä specializing in far-right movements, Otsola has been a significant hub for activists, particularly in Southern Finland.

The police are currently investigating the fire as a case of arson, noting evidence suggesting the flames were ignited from outside the building. At this stage, no suspects have been identified. Ansi Murto, a senior detective at the Eastern Uusimaa police department, confirmed that all possibilities will be explored.

The blue-black movement, a nationalist group using the Otsola venue, claims that the building’s surveillance cameras had been intentionally obscured prior to the fire, leading them to suspect the incident was planned. They have also accused far-left activists of harassing their property.

The Otsola facility, which opened in December 2023, hosts a variety of nationalist activities, including concerts featuring like-minded bands and fight training sessions associated with extremist groups. Kotonen noted that this sort of activity has increasingly become part of the far-right’s strategy in Finland, with groups emphasizing more decentralized operations compared to older, hierarchical organizations.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions between extremist groups and their opposition, underscoring the challenges faced by local authorities in addressing rising extremist activities within the country.
