Authorities investigate Remeo waste facility following fire in Rusk, Finland
Authorities in Tampere have initiated a preliminary investigation regarding the operations of a waste management facility that had a significant fire several days ago. The lead investigator, Ossi Kaario, has confirmed that a report was filed with the police, identifying environmental damage as the initial charge; this may evolve as the investigation progresses.
Currently in its early stages, the inquiry does not have further details on potential suspects. Officers plan to compare the facility’s operations against its licensing conditions and assess whether these activities played a role in the outbreak of the fire.
The incident occurred at Remeo’s waste processing plant in Rusk, where a major blaze erupted in an energy waste pile last Tuesday, releasing harmful smoke into the environment for several days. A hazardous materials warning that had been in effect for the area was lifted only on Saturday.
Previously, the Pirkanmaa regional environmental authority stated that Remeo’s operations in Rusk could not continue as they had been, citing repeated violations of permitted waste volumes. An inspection was conducted on Thursday, leading to immediate measures by the authority. The company had already received notice of issues concerning waste management at the end of October. Last Tuesday marked the third occasion in a short span that emergency services were called to the same facility.
Tampere’s mayor, Kalervo Kummola, expressed hope on Monday that the waste facility could be relocated, with Tarastenjärvi proposed as a new site. This area already accommodates waste management operations for Pirkanmaa, including a facility that incinerates mixed waste for energy.
