Aalborg municipality raises alarm over disturbing content on Telegram affecting children

Fifteen-year-old Bashar Khalouf has experienced disturbing content on the messaging platform Telegram, including pornography, naked images, and violent videos depicting death. Khalouf, who is in ninth grade at Bundgaardskolen in Aalborg, deleted the app after encountering such graphic material.

Telegram, with over 900 million users globally, allows anonymous interactions, leading to the sharing of unsettling content without knowledge of the creators behind it. In response to this issue, Aalborg Municipality is raising awareness about Telegram’s risks and informing parents and schools about its extreme content via informational pamphlets. The municipality encourages parents to engage more deeply with their children’s online lives.

Khalouf initially downloaded the app out of curiosity, but he was unprepared for the disturbing material he would confront, believing that protections were in place on all social media platforms. Rikke Møller Larsen, a consultant for the municipality’s joint project between schools, social authorities, and the police, highlighted the ease of access to such content today compared to a year and a half ago, when it was only available on the dark web.

While Aalborg Municipality has not determined how many children are using Telegram, it is evident that many children are exposed to troubling material, as some gossip groups on the app boast over 1,000 members.

To support parents, Aalborg Municipality has issued six recommendations on navigating their children’s digital interactions. School leaders express the challenges of managing the vast array of content on social media. The anonymity of Telegram presents significant concerns, often facilitating criminal behavior and severe bullying.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard acknowledged the growing problems posed by social media, recognizing the municipality’s proactive efforts to inform the community and suggesting the need for potential regulations on harmful platforms.
