Flights cancelled at Værnes Airport due to thick fog affecting 14,000 passengers
The first flight since 11 a.m. today has landed at Værnes Airport, yet the situation at the airport remains unchanged. A total of 42 arrivals and departures have been cancelled due to thick fog that has affected operations.
Airport director Marit Helene Stigen commented on the uncertainty, stating, “We know that there are quite a few flights scheduled to land and take off this evening. The situation remains unclear as we await further updates.” Approximately 14,000 passengers are impacted by the weather conditions.
Travelers at the terminal are advised to follow information provided by their airlines. Stigen expressed hope for an improvement in visibility, but there is no confirmation of when flights may resume.
Among those affected are Marthe Jacobsen and Marius Kristoffer Olsen, who were scheduled to fly home to Mo i Rana at 12:45 but are still waiting at the airport. Jacobsen shared, “The only information we received was a rescheduled time for 15:00, which was then also cancelled. Now we are just waiting for further details.” Olsen added that while there’s not much to be done about the weather, more communication would be appreciated.
Another passenger, Jenny Asmervik, who was returning after military leave, voiced her uncertainty about whether to await a new flight or return home until tomorrow.
Stigen characterized the circumstances as highly unusual for Værnes, noting that such fog-related disruptions to air traffic rarely occur. As of 15:15, 15 flights were impacted, with either returns to their departure points or flights bypassing Værnes. She concluded, “Landing in fog is challenging. No flights have landed since 11:30.” Stigen remains in close contact with air traffic control and hopes for weather improvements by evening rush hour.
