A magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred near Öskja this morning at around 9 AM, with a depth of nearly five kilometers. This is the largest quake recorded in the area in over two years.
Salóme Jórunn Bernharðsdóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Meteorological Office, indicated that the earthquake is believed to be associated with geothermal activity and land uplift. However, she clarified that this single tremor does not signify an impending volcanic eruption.
Land uplift began in the Öskja region in the summer of 2021, and magma has been accumulating beneath the surface. The uplift activity has been relatively stable, but a slowdown was noted just over a year ago.
