Children embrace creativity and courage through superhero play in Hurup, Thy

Parents are ushered out, and children tie capes around their necks—transforming into superheroes! This evening’s focus is on bravery, as the children begin by doing the opposite of what the teacher instructs during a jumping game. Learning that making mistakes isn’t dangerous is a vital skill everyone could benefit from.

Anders Boris Larsen, a participant, enjoys the absence of parents during the superhero activities, stating with a smile, “It’s annoying when they’re always around.” Every week, children in Hurup, Thy, engage in superhero play and creative exercises as an alternative to traditional activities like scouting or badminton. The initiative aims to cultivate each child’s unique skills, inspired by Angelina Owino, who acts as the head “superhero” of the small club.

Owino emphasizes the importance of embracing mistakes, leading games that encourage the children to understand it’s okay to fail. She is also a creative leader at Kunsthal Jens, where the superheroes gather. Reflecting on her childhood, Owino notes there were fewer creative options available, prompting her to create this initiative herself.

During their first of five sessions, the children draw their heroes, with Sofie Catarina Kobberø Fuglsang depicting her grandparents and mother while seated at an unusual angle beneath a table. “It’s fun and a bit weird to draw under the table,” she laughs. Owino explains that this unconventional setup sparks creativity and allows children to explore their imaginations freely.

The program has filled its roster with six aspiring superheroes, illustrating a growing demand for innovative, creative opportunities in the region. The North Jutland Regional Committee has financially supported this cultural project, allowing local children to engage in superhero training throughout the year.
