Proposed amendments to adoption laws in Denmark may allow for the adoption of children in state care to the Faroe Islands.
In 2014, Denmark implemented a legislative change that has accelerated the process for many children, particularly those in state custody, to be freed for adoption. Following this change, the state is required to demonstrate that there is little likelihood of rehabilitation for the biological parents.
Since the introduction of this law, the number of children in state care has increased, prompting the Danish Institute for Human Rights to raise concerns about potential violations of children’s rights and the rights of their families.
Anna Dam, a legal advisor at the Faroe Islands Child Protection Agency, suggests that financial considerations may be the driving force behind the legal changes in Denmark.
