A new initiative is evolving in Finland regarding the disposal of fishing gear, particularly concerning the recycling of plastic fishing equipment. Historically, damaged nets ended up in mixed waste, but with the EU’s directive on single-use plastics coming into effect after the New Year, a shift is occurring. From early in the new year, plastic fishing gear will be required to be collected separately and recycled.

The initial phase of this project will be modest and experimental, introducing 13 fixed collection points along the southern and western coasts of Finland, specifically between Naantali and Kotka. Secondary collection points will also be established, focusing on passive fishing gear like nets, traps, and pots containing plastic.

The collection effort will be managed by Suomen Pakkauskierrätys Rinki, an organization already responsible for packaging waste at Rinki eco-points. Taneli Lumiaro, the contractual representative for Rinki, emphasizes the importance of spreading awareness among recreational fishermen so they can contribute their old nets for recycling.

In its beginning stages, the collection effort will carefully monitor the volume and types of waste being generated. Insights gathered will help determine where to position collection points as the initiative expands in spring 2024. While the original EU regulation applies to marine fishing, Finnish legislation will also encompass inland waters.

As the network of collection points grows—totaling 150, with half being permanent and the other half mobile—the initiative aims to repurpose collected waste into new products like plastic granules for items such as plant pots. The program also includes opportunities for local fishermen to refurbish equipment and donate it to young anglers.
