Tampereen Teatteri initiates change negotiations for all staff due to funding cuts in Finland
Tampereen Teatteri has initiated change negotiations affecting all staff members, as detailed by the theater’s director, Mikko Kanninen. Multiple factors contribute to these negotiations, primarily the renovation of the main stage, which will result in lost ticket sales and restaurant revenue. Additionally, the costs associated with temporary facilities during the renovation add to the financial strain.
Kanninen noted that these negotiations were prompted by the announcement of a €164,000 reduction in state funding for the theater next year, following a decision by the Ministry of Education and Culture to cut the theater’s personnel working years by four. This creates a significant shortfall, particularly for the current year, which the negotiations aim to mitigate.
While it remains impossible to determine the exact number of staff reductions needed, discussions surrounding potential cost savings will commence in the first meeting with staff representatives next week. The negotiations will encompass the entire workforce.
The goal is to achieve substantial cost reductions by 2025 and implement structural reforms to regain financial stability. The negotiations are expected to take between two to six weeks. Kanninen emphasized the commitment to maintaining the quality of Tampereen Teatteri in the future despite the challenges faced.
