Faroese Parliament to discuss amendments to adoption law in Tórshavn

The Faroese Parliament, Løgtingið, will discuss amendments to the adoption law.

The government aims to establish agreements regarding adoption not only with Denmark but with all Nordic countries, which deviates from current legislation.

On January 16, the organization Danish International Adoption (DIA) announced that it will cease facilitating international adoptions. DIA was the only organization in Denmark managing adoptions, which also included those in the Faroe Islands.

There is also a proposal concerning temporary placements for children adopted without consent. This amendment aims to ensure that Faroese families can support a child born within the Kingdom who is available for adoption, a process referred to as domestic international adoption.

Changes will be implemented in the parental authority law so that those with whom the child is temporarily placed will have parental rights for the duration of the placement.

A parliamentary session is scheduled for today at 1 PM, with the adoption amendments being the sole agenda item.
