Lilly Andreassen, a 90-year-old woman whose story highlighted significant issues in elderly care in Norway, was remembered fondly during her funeral at Alfaset Chapel. Her daughter, Ira Elvebakk, spoke about Lilly’s love for roses, particularly red ones, which adorned her casket as a fitting tribute. Lilly passed away after a prolonged illness, and Ira noted that empathy and love became increasingly important as one ages.

Many became aware of Lilly through the documentary “Omsorg bak lukka dører” (Care Behind Closed Doors), which aired almost two years ago and revealed the inadequate care she received from home services. Hidden camera footage showed that over several days, Lilly received little to no food, missed medication assistance, and had 21 different caregivers in just 16 days, leading to her declining health and isolation.

Her story resonated throughout Norway, prompting discussions about the state of elderly care. Notable figures, including actor Lise Fjeldstad, expressed her wish to have paid tribute with a poem at the service. Fjeldstad has continued to advocate for improvements in elderly care, acknowledging that many experience indignities similar to those Lilly faced.

Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre remarked that Lilly’s legacy has raised awareness about ensuring dignified care for the elderly. He emphasized the need for municipalities to cater to the diverse needs of older individuals.

Ira reflected on her mother’s improved quality of life in a nursing home during her final years, where she formed friendships and enjoyed activities like dancing. The service celebrated Lilly’s joy in life and her spirited nature, closing with a heartfelt message as Ira placed two red roses on her casket, bidding her farewell with “Rest in peace, mom.”
