A recent study conducted by the UKK Institute in Tampere, Finland, has established new fitness benchmarks for middle-aged individuals aged 40 to 69. According to the research, a walking distance of 600 meters in six minutes and a maximum oxygen uptake of approximately 30 milliliters per kilogram per minute are deemed suitable minimum goals. The study analyzed data collected from the working-age population in Finland during 2017 and 2021.

Olli-Pekka Nuuttila, a physical activity physiologist at the UKK Institute, explained that individuals who fell below these thresholds often felt their fitness was inadequate and reported physical limitations. The research assessed perceived mobility constraints over a two-kilometer walk and during multi-floor stair climbing.

The study also revealed that these fitness thresholds decrease with age, with women generally having lower standards than men. It highlights the importance of maintaining sufficient endurance fitness for daily activities, noting that even slight improvements in fitness can significantly reduce health risks.

This research has been published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, contributing valuable insight into the physical health of middle-aged individuals in Finland.
