The father of a 17-year-old boy who died in a fire at a treatment center two weeks ago is determined to advocate for better resources for children struggling with addiction. The boy, Geir, will be buried on his 18th birthday.
His mother, Katrín Ingvadóttir, shared during a memorial service that those who knew Geir understood he had “one of the biggest hearts in the world,” as he tirelessly helped others, often at his own expense.
Geir’s father has called for improved services for children facing addiction issues, questioning the adequacy of current treatment facilities. “How many banks have we built? Yet we have this useless treatment center for our children. For the future,” he emphasized, expressing his frustration with the status quo.
He stated that society has reached a breaking point, with people approaching him, expressing pride in his ongoing fight, and he affirmed his commitment to continue advocating for change.
