Socialist Party submits candidates for 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland

The Socialist Party has submitted its candidates for the 2024 parliamentary elections, emphasizing its campaign focus on housing, taxation, and democracy. Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, the party’s representative for the Reykjavik South constituency, noted that assembling the candidate lists went smoothly, with many qualified party members willing to run, resulting in some unable to join the final slate. The lists were submitted to the national electoral committee today. Given the limited time available for finalizing the lists, Sanna believes that choosing to present candidates rather than hold primaries was the right decision for the Socialists.

The party plans to engage in discussions about the election process post-elections, to assess what worked well and what could be improved. The Socialists are determined to promote their priorities across various platforms, with debates scheduled for tomorrow among party leaders, and candidates participating in panel discussions and podcasts.

Sanna stressed the importance of discussing necessary societal changes rather than focusing on individual candidates, advocating for a productive dialogue on key issues that need addressing. She highlighted that the party will prioritize housing, as having a roof over one’s head is essential for citizens, and future housing development should be based on social principles. Taxes on high-income individuals should be adjusted to alleviate the burden on middle and lower-income earners.

Emphasizing that the power should lie with the people, Sanna expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, stating she has strong allies on her team to drive the conversation toward meaningful issues.
