Parents express concerns over child welfare issues at town meeting in Faxe Municipality

Emotions ran high at a town meeting held last night in Haslev Hallerne, where around 100 parents and family members gathered to discuss failures and issues surrounding child welfare cases in Faxe Municipality. Gry Skrædderdal Jakobsen, a mother whose son has not attended school for over four years due to personal challenges, voiced her concerns and posed questions to the mayor. Reflecting on the evening, she remarked it was difficult and emphasized her lack of high expectations, saying, “I always get very emotional hearing other parents’ stories.”

Recent findings revealed discrepancies in 20 out of 21 child welfare cases in Faxe Municipality, prompting a comprehensive review of 1,000 cases for similar issues. These concerns range from poor case handling, staff turnover, and long waiting times. The mayor and the relevant director invited affected parents to engage in dialogue. Despite the initiative, many attendees left feeling anxious and disappointed. Valdemar Haab, a local resident and administrator of a Facebook group on child welfare issues, expressed frustration, stating, “People had hoped for more uplifting answers,” while adding that the responses received were superficial.

Ole Vive, the mayor from the Liberal Party, maintained a more optimistic outlook, highlighting the opportunity for many ordinary citizens to voice their concerns. While acknowledging the intensity of the emotions in the room, he insisted that constructive questions were raised and valuable advice was provided. Vive recognized the challenges in the child welfare sector and noted that the municipality would not have called the meeting if everything was functioning smoothly. Currently, Faxe Municipality is approximately halfway through the review of the 1,000 cases.
