Russian man charged with explosives possession following Billund Airport incident in Denmark

A 37-year-old Russian man has been charged with possession and transportation of explosives for detonation, attempted theft of a particularly serious nature, and disruption of critical infrastructure. These charges were revealed during a court hearing today, which focused on whether he should remain in custody following an incident that led to the evacuation of Billund Airport.

On April 20, Billund Airport was closed for nine hours due to a bomb threat. The man was arrested in connection with the threat, prompting a significant response from police, firefighters, and military bomb disposal teams. The airport reopened around 7 PM.

During today’s hearing, the defendant’s lawyer recited the specific charges, which had previously been kept from the public. These include Article 192A concerning weapons possession, Article 286 regarding serious theft, and Article 193 about disruption of critical infrastructure.

The defendant has partially admitted guilt but has not disclosed which specific charges he acknowledges. His lawyer expressed confusion over the secrecy surrounding the allegations, asserting that there is nothing in the case that warrants such confidentiality.

Evidence of TATP, a highly potent and unstable explosive also known as “Mother of Satan”, was found at the airport. Police are currently assessing the amount of this explosive after an initial evaluation.

The defendant claimed in a written statement that evidence had been fabricated against him regarding the quantity of explosives and expressed concern about pressure from prison staff and fellow inmates. He also stated he is fleeing from Russia and has sought asylum in Finland, denying any connection to the Russian state.

The court has ordered that the man remain in custody until November 28. Authorities have chosen not to disclose further details about the charges.
