A tragic incident occurred on the Nordlandsbanen railway line between Bjerka and Finneidfjord, resulting in the death of a train driver when a passenger train derailed after hitting a landslide. This segment, approximately 5 kilometers long, has a history of similar events; since a deadly landslide in 1996 that claimed four lives, including one individual whose body was never recovered, there have been 31 registered landslide incidents in the area.

Last Thursday marked what is likely the 32nd report, leading to another fatality. Recent statistics indicate that the Nordlandsbanen experiences the highest frequency of landslides in Norway, primarily due to its challenging topography and lengthy route. The company responsible for maintaining the railway, Bane Nor, is proactive in addressing these risks, launching numerous safety measures since 2015. Despite this, there were concerns regarding the adequacy of these measures and whether more could have been done to prevent the latest incident.

In the past two years, there have been significant increases in landslide registrations, with eight incidents reported in 2023 alone. Bane Nor’s CEO noted that the challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather are becoming more pronounced. The focus remains on enhancing infrastructure resilience and improving preventative strategies.

Transportation Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård stressed the importance of determining the cause of the accident while recognizing the recurring nature of such incidents in the region. He emphasized the commitment to ensuring safe transportation across all modes, including rail. Investigations are ongoing, and the emphasis remains on thorough safety evaluations throughout the infrastructure.
