Pirkkala, located in the Pirkanmaa region, has been recognized as Finland’s most vibrant municipality for the fourth consecutive year, according to a study conducted by WSP Finland. The evaluation ranked Finnish municipalities based on 22 different indicators measuring productivity, human capital, and adaptability for the future. Notably, Pirkkala boasts a population of approximately 20,900, just a 15-minute drive from the bustling city of Tampere.

The gap between Pirkkala and the next municipalities on WSP’s list, Helsinki and Espoo, has grown. WSP’s leading expert, Terhi Tikkanen-Lindström, attributed Pirkkala’s success to its strategic location near Tampere and favorable demographic factors—nearly 70% of residents are under 55 years old and around 35% hold a higher education degree.

During recent years, Pirkkala has also benefited from the shift toward e-commerce, attracting several major logistics companies to the area, particularly along Highway 3 and near the airport. Furthermore, a new shopping center close to the Tampere border has enhanced local employment opportunities.

While the municipality has seen significant income levels among residents, with seven individuals earning over a million euros last year, this has led to higher housing costs. In contrast, Tampere ranked 19th in the same evaluation, with neighboring municipalities surpassing it, indicating a shift in residence preferences among families seeking more space.

The rankings highlight Helsinki’s notable ascent, alongside Espoo, largely due to an influx of new residents and strong performance in tourism and culture. Meanwhile, municipalities such as Keitele experienced a significant rise in ranking due to green investments, while others, like Humppila and Hailuoto, saw significant drops.
