Ólafsdóttir defends preschool staff’s right to work amid strike in Sauðárkrókur, Iceland

Inga Rún Ólafsdóttir, chair of the municipal negotiating committee, states that staff at a preschool in Sauðárkrókur had the legal right to report to work this morning despite a strike being in effect. She criticized the strike’s impact on wage negotiations, claiming that general staff members affiliated with other unions, who are not preschool teachers, had the right to work and open the preschool.

The municipality informed parents yesterday that they could bring their children to the preschool, even with the ongoing strike by preschool teachers. However, parents were reportedly sent back with their children due to the strike situation.

Ólafsdóttir emphasized that it is permissible for employees not participating in the strike to maintain preschool operations, and noted that while the rights of those striking are respected, those not on strike are entitled to perform their jobs. She expressed concern that such actions could significantly hinder negotiations, suggesting that the teachers’ union may be violating the rights of other employees.

The ongoing strike and the legal discussions around it have raised questions about operational continuity in public services and the complexities surrounding labor rights during strikes in Iceland.
