Inga Rún Ólafsdóttir addresses preschool staff rights amid ongoing strike in Sauðárkrókur

Inga Rún Ólafsdóttir, chair of the municipal negotiating committee, stated that staff at a preschool in Sauðárkrókur had a legal right to come to work this morning despite an ongoing strike. She highlighted that general staff members, not involved in the strike, had the legal right to keep the preschool operational.

The municipality had informed parents yesterday that they could bring their children to the preschool, even though the teachers were on strike. However, parents were forced to take their children back home.

Ólafsdóttir emphasized that the actions taken by the teachers’ union could violate the rights of other workers. “Our interpretation of the law is that it is permitted for employees not on strike to maintain preschool operations as usual. While we respect the rights of those who have ceased working, those not on strike have the right to perform their duties,” she explained.

She expressed concerns that the strike management at the preschool could have negative ramifications for ongoing negotiations. “Unfortunately, I believe that such actions will have very adverse effects. We see the teachers’ union as infringing on the rights of other staff members,” she added.

The situation at the Sauðárkrókur preschool reflects broader tensions in labor negotiations, as conflicts arise between different employee groups and their unions during the strike.
