An anonymous tip has prompted Faxe Municipality in South Zealand, Denmark, to initiate investigations into contaminated soil. The municipality plans to collaborate with an analysis firm to examine soil at two specific addresses mentioned in the tip received in August.

Mayor Ole Vive expressed concern about instances of unauthorized soil and construction waste disposal. Recent reports revealed that Peter E. Nielsen, a local hauling company, has allegedly been dumping construction debris and contaminated soil on agricultural land in both Faxe and Køge municipalities without prior knowledge of the authorities.

The municipality is currently seeking landowners’ permission to collect soil samples from the identified locations. Mayor Vive emphasized the importance of dialogue in addressing the issue, but he warned that if cooperation fails, they would resort to legal actions.

Faxe Municipality previously confirmed that Peter E. Nielsen has illegally disposed of materials such as asphalt, brick, and plastic near the village of Nielstrup. According to the mayor, the existing regulatory framework is insufficient to uncover such violations until it is too late.

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke described the situation as “grotesque,” asserting that it poses serious environmental risks. He plans to push for regulatory changes and enhanced oversight to prevent further incidents.

There are no precise estimates of the total volume of soil being moved in Denmark, but environmental guidelines suggest at least 15 million tons are handled, with current practices lacking adequate control. Heunicke aims to convene experts, municipalities, and industry representatives to address soil contamination comprehensively, citing a need for stringent regulations across the country.
