Strike attempt at preschool in Skagafjörður may affect negotiations in Iceland

A strike attempt at a preschool in Skagafjörður may impact the ongoing salary negotiations between teachers and municipal authorities, according to the head of the Icelandic Teachers’ Union. There needs to be a mutual understanding of what a strike entails.

The Teachers’ Union has been addressing what it perceives as an attempt to undermine the strike in Skagafjörður. The Union’s president, Magnús Þór Jónsson, expressed concerns that this situation could influence their negotiations. He mentioned that they are currently evaluating the circumstances with their team who traveled north to engage with local groups and ensure a shared understanding of the implications of the strike.

The Ársalir preschool in Sauðárkróki invited parents to bring their children in this morning as the strike was initiated there. Some parents attended with their children, but they eventually left due to the presence of strike enforcement at the site.

Magnús stated that the Union would wait to see how events unfold. A team is assisting in the north, including the chair of the preschool teachers’ union and a lawyer from the Teachers’ Union, alongside a group from Lundaskóli in Akureyri, to monitor the development of the situation.
