Keskisuomen District Court in Jyväskylä to hear serious violent crime case today
The Keskisuomen District Court in Jyväskylä is set to begin hearings today for a serious violent crime case that occurred during the summer. The prosecution is seeking punishment for a man in his twenties for the attempted murder of a young adult woman and for aggravated sexual assault. The incident took place in July, in an outdoor area between the Jyskän and Halssila neighborhoods.
According to police reports, the man perpetrated serious violence against the victim and used a sharp weapon during the attack. The victim and the suspect did not know each other beforehand. During the preliminary investigation, the man admitted to using a sharp weapon but denied the other alleged actions.
Marika Visakorpi-Kemppainen, a prosecutor from the Western Finland prosecuting authority, explained earlier this month to Yle the change in the charges from attempted manslaughter to attempted murder. She stated, “After considering the case, I found that based on the material available, there are grounds to present weighty consideration to the court regarding the brutality and cruelty involved.”
Visakorpi-Kemppainen noted that this case bears similarities to the murder of a young girl that occurred in Valkeakoski, highlighting comparable features such as the assault taking place in a public space by an unknown assailant.
The police have been investigating the scene with a dog. Further updates on the case will be provided as the hearings continue.
