Icelandic Medical Association initiates vote on potential strike actions

The Icelandic Medical Association has initiated a vote regarding potential strike actions starting today. This voting process will continue until Thursday. Negotiations over working conditions are ongoing, and the Association’s next meeting will take place with the National Mediator tomorrow morning.

If the strike is approved, it is planned to commence on November 18th. Steinunn Þórðardóttir, chair of the Association, indicated that if the strikes proceed, they would be temporary, occurring every other week through December, and would not involve all medical facilities simultaneously. However, should negotiations remain unresolved by the end of December, daily strikes may be implemented in January.

Despite the looming potential for strikes, Steinunn emphasized that discussions continue actively. “We hope it’s unnecessary to resort to strikes, and we are still in very active dialogue,” she stated.
