Danish politicians focus on technological solutions to meet climate targets amidst urgent calls for action

Green energy is essential, vehicles must transition to electric power, and the public needs to accept meat-free days. These are among various initiatives aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. However, experts emphasize that much more needs to be done. A recent UN report indicated that if current greenhouse gas emissions continue, global temperatures could rise by 2.8 degrees Celsius.
Many Danish politicians are betting on technological solutions to meet climate law targets, but the Climate Council warns that we must accelerate these efforts. Key technologies expected to contribute include:
**CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage):** Climate Minister Lars Aagaard describes this technology as “a crucial tool” for reaching CO2 goals. It captures CO2 from industrial sources like waste incineration and cement production, and can even extract CO2 directly from the atmosphere. Captured CO2 can be stored underground, where it solidifies. A new funding initiative of 28.7 billion kroner has been introduced to support these projects.
**Pyrolysis:** This process converts agricultural waste and other organic materials into biochar, a form of charcoal that helps sequester carbon in soil for hundreds of years. Although government support for pyrolysis technology is substantial, the projected CO2 reduction has been revised downwards due to effectiveness concerns.
**Power-to-X (PtX):** This technology involves transforming electricity from renewable sources into hydrogen, which can then be used as fuel. However, the high cost of PtX facilities and significant energy losses make this a challenging option.
**Bovaer:** A supplement for cattle feed, Bovaer aims to decrease methane emissions from livestock by about 30%. While effective, it requires regular administration, raising logistical and animal welfare concerns.
The Danish government is investing in these technologies, recognizing the urgent need to address climate challenges more effectively.
