Four children are critically ill in intensive care following an E. coli outbreak at the Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík. A pediatric infectious disease specialist indicated that more children may need to be transferred to the intensive care unit. Additionally, seven other children are hospitalized with varying levels of symptoms.

The first case was identified last Tuesday afternoon, and a total of 44 children have been infected, with eleven currently hospitalized. While the critically ill children are not in immediate danger, they require intensive monitoring due to potential kidney complications from the toxins produced by the bacteria.

The specialist emphasized the importance of adhering to food safety practices, noting that while many are vigilant about cooking poultry thoroughly, greater care is necessary with ground beef. He remarked that outbreaks of this magnitude are unprecedented in Iceland, highlighting the severe impact on affected families and the healthcare system.

As the health authorities monitor the situation, there are concerns that additional children may fall ill in the coming days. However, it is unlikely that the scale of new cases will be as significant as what has already been documented. The pediatrician called for heightened hygiene and proper food preparation, especially in settings where food is served to large groups, particularly children.

Lastly, the public is urged not to overload the emergency department at the children’s hospital with non-emergent issues, as the facility is dealing with significant pressures related to the outbreak.
