Lena Lindenskov Mohr reflects on the unique joy she felt two decades ago when she held the first edition of the women’s magazine “Kvinnubløð” in her hands. Together with her colleagues, they spent two years developing a publication aimed at Faroese women, featuring stories about Faroese women and showcasing clothing available in local shops.

Mohr notes there was never any doubt about the magazine’s potential. Faroese women purchased significantly more weekly magazines than their Danish counterparts, leading them to believe a publication with more relevant content would resonate well.

The main motivation for launching the magazine was to address the invisibility of women in the Faroese society. Mohr explains that women were hardly seen or heard in the media, and few occupied political or top business positions, making it challenging for women to find role models. Consequently, respect for women and their capabilities was low, resulting in fewer women stepping forward.

Today, Tóra Effersøe Mortensen serves as the editor-in-chief, acknowledging the significant changes since the magazine’s debut in 2004. A total of 153 editions have been published, highlighting numerous women on the cover for others to admire, not to mention the stories and experiences shared in the magazine.

Initially, many women were eager to share their stories but wished to remain anonymous to avoid public scrutiny. According to Mortensen, this is now a rare occurrence; in her six years as editor, only one woman has chosen to remain anonymous.
