Poll shows shifting political support in Iceland ahead of 2024 Alþing elections

In a recent poll conducted by Maskína, the political landscape in Iceland appears to be shifting ahead of the upcoming Alþing elections in 2024. The results show that the Samfylking party holds the highest support at 22.2%, while Viðreisn is emerging as the second-largest party with 16.2%. The Flokkur fólksins (People’s Party) has made significant gains, reaching 9.3%.

The poll indicates that the Miðflokkurinn (Centre Party) stands as the third largest, garnering 15.9% of votes, closely followed by the Sjálfstæðisflokkur (Independence Party) at just under 14%. The Framsóknarflokkur (Progressive Party) also appears poised to secure seats in the Alþing, with a reported 6.9% support.

However, both the Píratar (Pirate Party) and the Vinstri græn (Left-Green Movement) fail to meet the threshold for parliamentary representation, with the Píratar receiving only 4.5% and the Vinstri græn even lower at 3.85%. Additionally, the Sósíalistaflokkurinn (Socialist Party) has not gained sufficient backing, polling at 4%.

The implications of this poll suggest a challenging situation for parties on the left, while indicating a potentially vibrant period for those aligned with the center and right as the elections approach.
