Man sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Salon, Finland

The Varsinais-Suomi District Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for a murder that occurred in Salon in January. The homicide took place on January 11 at a private residence in Kiikala, where a 41-year-old man was killed. Four men aged between 18 and 40 were charged in connection with the murder, which the prosecutor believed was planned as revenge over suspicions that the victim had stolen money and drugs from one of the accused.

According to the prosecution, the group entered the victim’s home armed with two pistols and other weapons. They assaulted the victim and subsequently coerced him into administering a lethal dose of drugs. Ultimately, the victim died from being shot in the stomach.

The court found one of the defendants guilty of murder. Toni Mikael Jaakola, the individual convicted of murder, was also sentenced for two drug offenses, two aggravated drug offenses, aggravated assault, two counts of theft, and a firearms offense. The court ordered Jaakola, born in 1984, to pay over €60,000 in legal costs and for the emotional and financial suffering of the victim’s relatives.

Meanwhile, three other men were convicted of aggravated assault related to the homicide. The prosecution had sought murder convictions for them, but they received sentences of around three years in prison. All defendants denied charges of murder or complicity in the act.

Jaakola argued that he was guilty of aggravated bodily harm and manslaughter instead, denying that he shot the victim and claiming the death resulted from an accidental discharge by someone else. The court rejected this defense, stating it was evident that Jaakola was with the victim last and was responsible for the fatal shot. The judgment is not yet final.
