Three children are in serious condition in an intensive care unit following an E.coli outbreak at the Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík. The pediatric infectious disease specialist indicates that more children may need to be admitted to the ICU, with seven other children currently hospitalized showing varying degrees of symptoms.

The first case was diagnosed last Tuesday, which marked the start of the outbreak at Mánagarður. Over 40 children have been infected, with ten hospitalized. Among them, three are critically ill in the ICU, as E.coli can lead to severe complications, including kidney failure.

The specialist, Valtýr Stefánsson Thors, mentioned that one or two additional children may need to be admitted to the ICU in the coming days. Almost 20 children are currently under daily or alternate day monitoring at the hospital. The children under intensive care are not in immediate danger but are seriously unwell. The toxins from the bacteria can cause blood clotting issues in the kidneys, potentially requiring dialysis.

Valtýr emphasized the seriousness of such outbreaks, which underscore the need for proper food handling, particularly in settings serving larger groups, especially children. Proper cooking practices are crucial in preventing such incidents.

Despite the concerns, Valtýr asked the public not to overwhelm the pediatric emergency department unnecessarily, as they are currently facing significant challenges in managing the situation.

This outbreak represents a significant public health concern in Iceland, affecting not only the children and their families but also the overall functioning of the healthcare system.
