Cave closure extended until April 2025 in Mývatnssveit, Iceland
The cave discovered during the construction of the Jarðböðin in Mývatnssveit remains closed, with the closure now extended until April 2025. This information comes from the Environmental Agency, which stated that the cave must stay closed while efforts are underway for its protection.
The cave was unexpectedly found during construction work in early 2023, revealing unique artifacts that have remained untouched for thousands of years, according to experts from the Environmental Agency. As soon as the cave was discovered, it was decided to close it, and the initial closure lasted until October.
The Environmental Agency has announced the decision to prolong the closure until April 2025 to ensure the ongoing protection of the cave’s geological features. During this closure, the Agency may grant permits for limited access related to research or examination of the cave, but all other visits are prohibited.
The local community hopes that in the future, the public will have the opportunity to visit the cave once preservation efforts are complete.
