Two Rescued After Fishing Boat Strands

Search and rescue teams from Landsbjörg and the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter unit were dispatched this morning following the stranding of a fishing boat near Súgandafjörður. Two individuals were aboard the vessel, and authorities reported a successful rescue effort.

The operation involved different rescue boats, including Stella from Flateyri, Kobbi Láki from Bolungarvík, and the rescue ship Gísli Jóns from Ísafjörður. Additionally, the Björg rescue team from Suðureyri deployed personnel both by sea and land.

The fishermen were safely brought ashore by the rescue crew and subsequently transported by a Coast Guard helicopter to Suðureyri. The alarm was raised shortly after 6 AM by the vessel’s captain who contacted the Coast Guard.

The fishing boat remains grounded, and plans are underway to recover it later today with assistance from Landsbjörg’s rescue ships during the evening tide. Asgeir Erlendsson from the Coast Guard indicated that salvage efforts are expected to commence around 3 PM, aiming to refloat the boat during tonight’s high tide at approximately 6 PM.

The investigation into the incident is currently under the jurisdiction of the police in the West Fjords and the Transportation Accident Investigation Board.
