The seven times table is being taught in a third-grade classroom in Kauniainen, Finland, where Raija Pelli, a retired school volunteer affectionately known as “school grandma,” assists students with their studies. Pelli, who gained nationwide fame as a host on Yle’s Police TV in the 1990s, has become a cherished figure for many of the children.

Although Pelli retired in 2019, she remains active, volunteering two to three days a week at the school. She describes her role as supportive, helping students emotionally and academically in a nurturing environment.

Class teacher Tarja Ångerman praises Pelli’s contributions, highlighting her seamless collaboration with teachers. Pelli provides materials, assists with tasks, and shares valuable time with students, often being approached for help when needed. “When Raija is in class, students seem to ask her for help more readily than they do from me,” Ångerman notes.

The involvement of retirees like Pelli enhances the educational experience in Finnish schools. A report from Citizens’ Arena and Taloustutkimus revealed that 40% of Finns aged 65 and older participated in volunteer activities in the previous year. At the Mäntymäki branch of Kauniainen’s elementary school, all classes have a volunteer grandparent, with the current cohort numbering 24, a potential record for Finland.

Pelli finds fulfillment in her role, stating, “I feel like I have 19 grandchildren now—two of my own and 17 from others.” This close connection with the students is essential, providing them with a safe adult presence and an outlet for expressing their feelings.
