According to Uutissuomalainen (USU), new regulations will allow the use of mobile phones in classrooms only with permission from the teacher or principal. The proposed legislation stipulates that phones or other mobile devices can only be used for educational purposes or health-related needs. During the school day, both principals and teachers will have the authority to confiscate a student’s phone or other mobile devices if they disrupt teaching or learning activities.
Additionally, schools will be required to include guidelines on mobile device usage and storage in their rules. This requirement will apply throughout the entire school day, covering not only lessons but also breaks and lunchtime.
The proposed changes have been primarily driven by the National Coalition Party and the Finns Party. The preparation of this legislation is being overseen by Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz.
