Jens Meinhard Rasmussen, who also serves as the CEO of Smyril Line, delivered a keynote speech at the Varandi Heimur conference held in Giljanes yesterday. During his presentation, he emphasized the potential for commercial shipping to become “green” and outlined necessary measures to achieve the goal of eliminating carbon emissions by 2050.

He stated that the first steps towards this goal involve operational and energy savings, including sailing at slower speeds, reducing time spent in port, and undertaking other initiatives such as cleaning the hull and propeller. Rasmussen is also the chairman of the Association of Shipowners for Commercial Vessels.

However, he noted that to reach a truly “green” status with zero emissions, the industry must transition to fuels that do not emit carbon dioxide. This presents a significant challenge that will require collaboration among many stakeholders in the sector.
