The conference “Sustainable World” recently took place at Giljanes, aimed at promoting sustainable development in the Faroe Islands.

Kári Mortensen highlighted that the country still relies heavily on oil, with 90 percent of energy coming from fossil fuels, emphasizing the need for continued development in renewable energy sources. He pointed out that transitioning from oil to sustainable energy requires significant financial investment from private households.

“Those without substantial funds cannot participate in this transition,” Mortensen stated, noting that it is often individuals with higher incomes who have made the switch to renewable energy options. He stressed that ongoing initiatives need to be maintained and strengthened to ensure inclusivity in this transition, labeling it a significant political challenge.

Høgni Rasmussen, a key organizer of the conference, echoed the sentiment, stating that there is a considerable need for such initiatives. “It has become clear during the conference that we still have a long way to go in this area,” he remarked.

The article includes interviews with Kári Mortensen and Høgni Rasmussen, highlighting their insights on the urgency and necessity of encouraging sustainable practices across different economic strata in the Faroe Islands.
