Dead fish spotted along beach near Struer in Denmark

A staggering 250 meters of dead fish were spotted, forming a glistening silver-gray streak that stretched as far as the eye could see in the evening darkness. This concerning sight was reported by angler Kennet Brask, who visited a beach near Struer on Saturday evening at the suggestion of friends.

“The sheer volume of dead fish was astonishing,” Brask stated, estimating that several tons were affected. The deceased fish were bream, typically found in the freshwater of the bay, which is more akin to a shallow lake connected to Venø Bay in the Limfjord via a canal.

The situation has since been reported to authorities. Efforts to contact the local police for comments were unsuccessful. However, Brask noted that officials had visited the site and determined that saltwater from the Limfjord was the cause of the fish die-off. Bream are unable to survive in water with high salinity levels.

Brask expressed his confusion regarding this explanation, pointing out that the dead fish were found close to a sluice where freshwater is released. “It doesn’t make sense that saltwater would reach an area that continuously receives freshwater,” he remarked. While he acknowledged his non-expert status as a mere angler, Brask has a keen awareness of the deteriorating state of the seabed, a topic he has previously discussed due to the death of marine life in extensive regions.
