Ferry maintenance set to disrupt tourism on Grímsey, Iceland, in March

The ferry Sæfari, which connects Grímsey to mainland Iceland, is set to undergo maintenance in mid-March next year, a period local officials consider highly inconvenient for tourism on the island. Halla Ingólfsdóttir, the chair of the local council, emphasized that conducting repairs during the low season, either before or after the New Year, would be much more practical when tourist traffic is at its lowest.

The planned maintenance period poses a significant disruption, as previous repairs have been known to extend beyond the scheduled timeframe. For instance, a recent repair project was slated for a week but ultimately took eight weeks to complete. With no alternative vessels available to transport passengers during this time, tourism, including guided tours and accommodations, is expected to suffer greatly. Many visitors may choose to cancel their trips due to the lack of ferry services, leading to a decline in tourist activity on the island.

Local residents hope for the ferry to be repaired during a quieter time of the year to minimize the impact on tourism, which has been recovering positively.
