A train in Norway derailed while carrying nearly 50 passengers after striking a large rock. The train driver lost their life, and several passengers sustained minor injuries. Witness Karl Henry Haugli described the scene as horrifying.

The Norwegian Accident Investigation Board has been called to the site to determine the cause of the accident, which has not yet been established. It is known that the area has experienced similar landslides following heavy rainfall.

In Sweden, the likelihood of similar incidents is lower due to the country’s geography; however, certain routes remain at risk. Bengt Olsson, press chief at the Swedish Transport Administration, stated, “We are reviewing the routes where risks may exist. We are also in close dialogue with Norwegian authorities to learn more about what caused the accident.”

Recently, Svenskt Näringsliv published a report highlighting risks of landslides and erosion impacting Swedish infrastructure. The report noted that these risks are expected to increase, with several railway sections being particularly vulnerable. Nils Paul, an infrastructure expert at Svenskt Näringsliv, emphasized the need to improve knowledge on climate adaptation for infrastructure: “Awareness of these risks needs to be heightened in both the public and private sectors.”

The Swedish Transport Administration is actively working to secure infrastructure against landslides. Olsson remarked, “Of course, when something like this happens, we want to learn from what is discovered in Norway. If there’s something we can learn, we will take it on board.”

In Sweden, several railway sections are equipped with warning systems to alert traffic management of any hazards, including the potential collapse of earth or debris on the tracks.
