A tragic incident occurred recently at the treatment center Stuðlar, where 17-year-old Geir Örn Jacobsen died in a fire. His father has expressed criticism regarding the state of support systems for troubled youth, highlighting a significant lack of resources.

Just two days before his death, Geir Örn and his father participated in an interview where he criticized the indifference of the staff at Stuðlar, advocating for more effective management of addiction issues and mental health challenges faced by children residing there. A prior investigation into Stuðlar indicated that the facility was overstretched and that staff struggled to address the varied needs of the children.

Education and Child Welfare Minister Ásmundur Einar Daðason acknowledged that there has been a clear shortage of resources for troubled children. This inadequacy became glaringly evident when attempts were made to find placements for the children who were at Stuðlar during the fire. Minister Daðason mentioned that efforts are underway to increase available services, including temporary and continuation treatment options in the Mosfellsbær area, as well as additional facilities in the South.

Jón K. Jacobsen, Geir Örn’s father, has been advocating for his son’s well-being within the system for over a decade, emphasizing that care at Stuðlar was insufficient. The minister admitted that no one anticipated a fire at the emergency shelter, stating that it is essential to learn and adapt from such tragic events to minimize their impact on youths’ care.

Authorities are working diligently to ensure that the consequences of the fire affect the ongoing treatment of children in care at Stuðlar as little as possible.
