Residents in Mývatnssveit seek clarity on compensation after power outage damages in Iceland

Residents of Mývatnssveit are expressing confusion regarding compensation for damages caused by a power outage earlier this month. Many individuals have already spent hundreds of thousands on essential replacement appliances, leaving them in a difficult situation.

The outage, which struck on October 1, severely impacted the transmission system of Landsnet. Most of the damage occurred among customers of Rarik’s distribution network in Mývatnssveit, estimated to be in the tens of millions. Although Rarik and Landsnet engaged the insurance company Sjóvá to assess the damages, the community received a letter yesterday indicating that the damages were not compensable but that it might be possible to obtain settlement benefits, without explaining what these benefits might entail.

Rarik confirmed in a statement that the losses would be compensated and acknowledged their liability for the damages. They stated that the language used in Sjóvá’s letter was unfortunate and should not have been communicated to customers.

The local municipality has reiterated its commitment to pursue the matter further to ensure that residents receive fair compensation for their losses. As uncertainty hangs over the situation, Mývatnssveit residents await clarity on the compensation process.
