Dagur B. Eggertsson confirms he will run second for Samfylking party in North Reykjavik constituency

Dagur B. Eggertsson, the former mayor of Reykjavik, has confirmed that he did not seek the top position on the list for the Samfylking party in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Instead, he will be running in the second spot on the party’s ticket for the North Reykjavik constituency.

Eggertsson, who has been a member of the city council since 2002 and served as mayor from 2014 until earlier this year, transitioned to the position of chair of the city council at the beginning of 2024. It remains unclear whether he will resign from his role as a city councilor before the elections.

The Samfylking party will officially present its candidates in Reykjavik tomorrow at 11 AM, with clear indications of the leading candidates already taking shape. In the North Reykjavik constituency, Kristrún Frostadóttir and Dagur occupy the top two spots, while it is anticipated that Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson will head the ticket for the South Reykjavik constituency, followed by Ragna Sigurðardóttir, a physician and former city councilor.

Kristján Þórður Snæbjarnarson will appear third on the list for the second constituency, and sources suggest that Þórður Snær Júlíusson, the former editor of the outlet, is set to be third in another constituency. Jón Magnús Kristjánsson, a physician who previously sought a place on the list, announced on Facebook that the nomination committee did not provide him a position, citing the number of doctors and men of a similar age already in top positions within the party.

Both Dagur B. and Ragna are physicians, with Alma Möller, the chief epidemiologist, leading the party in the South-West constituency.
