Jón Gunnarsson, a member of the Independence Party, has secured the fifth position on the party’s list for the Southwest constituency in the upcoming parliamentary elections. His announcement follows a recent contest for the second place, which he lost to Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, the party’s vice-chair. After the list was fully revealed during a regional council meeting, some uncertainty circulated within the party regarding whether Jón would remain on the list.

Additionally, Jón is set to take on the role of special representative for Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson in the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries. This position will see him assist with various responsibilities alongside the Ministry of Social and Labor Affairs in the current interim government, which is in charge until the elections.

Reports indicate that Jón may temporarily step back from his parliamentary duties to focus on priority issues within the Ministry of Food. The complete list of candidates from the Independence Party for the Southwest district has been made available for public viewing.
