Two children hospitalized after E. coli outbreak at Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík

In a concerning health development, two children are in serious condition following an E. coli outbreak at Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík. A total of eighteen children are currently under medical supervision at the Children’s Hospital. Ragnar Bjarnason, a specialist at the hospital, indicates that seven of those children are hospitalized for treatment, with one child just over a year old among the affected.

Serious illness from E. coli often manifests several days post-infection, and in severe cases, it can lead to kidney failure. Bjarnason noted that hospital staff are managing the situation but acknowledged the strain caused by the sudden influx of critically ill children, necessitating a robust response from multiple healthcare professionals.

To ensure the safety of the community, Bjarnason has urged the public not to visit the Children’s Hospital unless necessary, suggesting that other healthcare facilities are better suited to handle less severe cases. The Chief Epidemiologist, Guðrún Aspelund, confirmed that the investigation into the outbreak’s origin is progressing well. Health officials are collecting samples from food sources and reviewing dietary histories of the affected children, as well as speaking with parents about the onset of symptoms.
