Vantaa education chief reveals no preventable measures for Viertola School shooting tragedy
Ilkka Kalo, the head of basic education in Vantaa, stated that there was no alternative course of action that could have prevented the school shooting at Viertola School in April. “There is no indication of how this could have been avoided. We had a new student join us in January. Our teachers acted appropriately and made efforts to integrate the new student,” Kalo explained.
He acknowledged that there were small signs suggesting not everything was right, but they were addressed. However, there were no indications that something as horrific as a shooting could occur. “When a child switches schools, adjusting to the new environment is crucial. That is standard practice in all schools in Finland,” he added.
The shooting at Viertola School resulted in the death of a sixth-grade boy, while two girls suffered serious injuries. A 13-year-old boy has since been suspected of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Kalo noted that Viertola School had regularly conducted drills for serious incidents. “There is always room for improvement, but Viertola School performed well, exemplarily, and with quality,” he remarked. A teacher successfully managed to coax the shooter, who was armed, out of the classroom, preventing further damage. The shooter had reportedly made a list of 15 students he intended to target.
“The teacher acted commendably in that situation. We all understand that if a situation like this arises, it’s important to try to de-escalate verbally,” Kalo stated. Moving forward, Vantaa will ensure that safety protocols are reviewed and that drills for various scenarios will be conducted regularly.
