Icelandic egg producers struggle to meet soaring demand leading to increased imports

Icelandic egg producers are struggling to meet the soaring demand for eggs from the nation’s consumers, leading to a significant increase in egg imports. Industry representatives highlight various factors contributing to the shortage, but they are optimistic about ramping up production in the coming months.

The Icelandic population has a high per capita consumption of eggs, but this year, availability has not kept pace with demand. Over the first eight months of the year, more than 90 tons of eggs were imported from Denmark, a staggering increase from just around 20 tons during the same period last year. This figure does not account for a substantial quantity of egg whites and other egg-based products also brought in from abroad. Large-scale users have predominantly utilized these imported eggs, which have also been available in several retail chains across the country.

Despite the shortfall, producers are committed to enhancing their output as they address the challenges that have arisen in the supply chain. The hope is that with continued adjustments and investments, the domestic market will stabilize and meet local demand more effectively in the near future.
